Growth and development of children
Growth :- Refers to increase in physical size of the whole body part or any of its parts. Means increase in size , height and weight.
- It implies growth of heart, brain, muscles and body in general.
- It can generally be easily observed, appraised or measured.
- Acc. to Hurlock ;- It is change in size, in proportion, disappearance of old features and acquisition of new ones.
- Acc. to Crow and Crow ;- Refers to structural and physiological changes.
- Acc. to H.V Meredith ;- Change in size, number, kind ,position and relative size.
- Acc. to Frank ;- Change in the any special part of the body.
Meaning of growth :-
- Intrinsic :- Inherited property + function of organisms.
- Intrinsic Changes :- Enlargement of muscles+ elongation of skelton + increase in size of internal body parts.
- Extrinsic Changes :- Quantitative changes like size, length, height, weigth.
- Measurable:- Measured, observed, quantified.
- Dependent upon multiple factors :- Education environment, glandular secreations and health.
- Not continuous :- ( not life long) Starts conception & continues upto some particular stage. Stops when person attain maturity.
Refers to a progressive increase in skill and capacity of function.
G.W. Allport's view (1948):- The development individual cannot be thought of a Thing in himself.
Development :- Growth + capability + maturation+ Interaction with environment.
J.E. Anderson's views (1952) :- Development is a process of integration many structures and function.
Meaning of Development :-
- Wider and comprehensive :- Physical, social, moral etc.
- Continuous :- Start with birth of child and ends with death o individuals.
- Changes in body and behavior :- Various parts of body
- Improvement in Behavior :- Physical, intellectual, emotional + promotes efficiency.
- Integrated process :- Physiological + psychological capacities and capabilities to acquire .
